Das Randomness

“God made everything out of nothing. But the nothingness shows through.” ~Paul Valéry, Mauvaises pensées et autres, 1942

My Super Sweet 16 premieres tonight. I haven’t been this happy since the end of last summer. Remember last summer? Full of Laguna/Pretentious adolescent goodness? Ahh summer, I cannot wait. It all kind of makes me yearn for a Benz of my own. Once Laguna premieres it’s so on.

Anyone – or maybe I should rephrase this – any of y’all from Austin? Because in case I’ve neglected to mention this, I’m going to be there in a few weeks for some R&R. Why? Because I’ve been to Marrakech, Casablanca, Lisbon, Sevilla, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Rome etc. etc., but not to fucking Texas or Connecticut for that matter. So any cool things to do in Austin would be greatly appreciated and you may even be handsomely rewarded. How does my undying love and devotion sound to you?

And since you all did so well with the whole suggestion of the books (but you know I’m now forced to replace one of those titles with some Rushdie), I’m now looking for new music. Over the past few months, I have become a 3hive whore and I’m damn proud of it, but more suggestions are welcome.

Gracias mis amigos. And once again, enjoy the honeybaked ham and/or brisket.

We just got a decent version of MTV up here in Canada (we've had it before, but it was total crap and lasted about five minutes before it went under), and um...I'm really addicted to Laguna Beach. On the one hand, I want to slap them all in their rich kid, high school drama glory, but on the other hand....I need to see more!

I've heard about this Sweet 16 show, and I have a funny feeling I may soon become addicted to that as well.

Think I should be worried about my new love for reality shows about annoying rich kids?

Wow, last summer of My Super Sweet 16 and Laguna seems like years ago. Those were good times. Maybe I should rethink spending the summer in Egypt. I hadn't even thought about the fact I'd be missing those shows.

Does it make me a total nerd that I had heard of Salman Rushdie but have no idea who 3hive is? I clearly can offer no music suggestions.

Let us know how Austin is. I've always wanted to go there.

Alana: Don't be worried. I'm equally as obsessed and I (used to) watch the OC, no worries.

Lizzie: Last summer feels like it was a million years ago. But dude, Cairo totally trumps insane amounts of bitchiness and spoiled 15 year olds.

Oh, I've been to Connecticut, but not to Texas. So no advice from me. Except I can say that my husband has been to Texas a few times and HE LOVES IT. Loves it.

You shouldn't have asked me. Because I will never shut up about music.

I love the following and would recommend them to anyone. Seriously, you can't go wrong:

Old 97's (from Texas, so you know they rock)
Rhett Miller (lead singer from the Old 97's, who has a new solo album that is HOTT!)
Clem Snide
Belle & Sebastian
Rufus Wainwright
Rocky Votolato (local Seattle guy who is awesome)

Oh and check out Just some guy who makes his own music in his basement and lets you download it for free. I heard him on NPR and have been a fan since.

Good luck!

Austin is sure to go by the Real World house. :) I'm an MTV bfriend doesn't understand but he still watched Real World and 8th and Ocean with me last night (he admitted Teddy was good looking). As for music to groove to, I would recommend some Gary Jules for when you are feeling mellow. He's great in my book. Enjoy!

Oh my god, I love that show. As I watch I alternate between, "That is really sad. Money can't buy happiness." and "Why can't I have a Lexus?"

I can say I am sooo excited at the premiere of Laguna Beach AND that the younger siblings will be on this year. They have been back filming, and blocking my way home, so continue to look for the dark haired girl in oversized sunglasses flipping them off...

I am not a huge "16" fan... they give me as big of a headache as I would have watching Springer.

Isabel has some great music suggestions. I have been listening to “Clap Your Hands Say Yeah” and “Morningwood” as of late.

Okay...another music suggestion (see I told you that you should have never asked me).

Pete Yorn just came up on my "random play" and I was reminded that I love him.

Love him.

That's all.

I just realized that we have nothing in common save for the fact that we are both black. No wait. I'm not black. I've got nothing.

just finished watching. This premiere did NOT disappoint. Question: do you think when these kids go off to college, their new roommate ever says "damn, you're the girl I made fun of on Super Sweet 16!"

Oh wait, they're parents probably spring for a single. what was I thinking.

I didn't realize that last night was the premiere, but GOD WAS IT AWESOME. I think that the son of the Island/Def Jam guy was the best Super Sweet Sixteen segment I've ever seen. And the chick who kept saying "I look so hot" and then got a SECOND car for her sweet 16 was a close second.

I think MTV should make a show that follows these kids when they grow up and get married. Can you imagine their weddings? And they will probably all get married at least 6 times, so plenty of material there.

I have been uncool about music lately but I'll get back to you if I think of anything else.

The best 16 episode was the one where the girl reenacted the last scene from Dirty Dancing.

It's like a car wreck- I don't want to watch, but I can't look away.

Ugh, my Super Sweet 16? I think I had blocked that out of my memory for the past two years. A girl I dated a couple of years ago loved that show. Too much stress and frivolity for me.

I need something deep. Like South Park. Or 90210 reruns.

No music suggestions really. I'm too mainstream and behind the times.

Y'all are awesome. And your suggestions will be put into effect (or affect maybe, not quite sure) in a few. You're also really fucking entertaining, just in case you didn't know.
