The first step is admitting you have a problem

“If you're all alone when the pretty birds have flown, Honey I’m still free, take a chance on me” - ABBA

“What music should I purchase?”

“Ummm, not sure. A little JT maybe” silently hums SexyBack.

“God, don’t ask her

“What? Why not?”

“Yes, why not ask me?”

Deep sigh “Because she” harshly points index finger at me “Likes Johnny Cash*”

“So?”

“And ABBA

Big smile and deep breath to fill the lungs with air and with eyes closed and head back, belts out: “So imagine I was glad to hear you’re coming. Suddenly I feel all right. And it’s gonna be so different when I’m on the stage toniiiiiiiiight…”

Rolls eyes, “See?!”

“I think the word we’re looking for here is ‘eclectic’”

I am an ABBA freak. Have you ever heard of those people who would willingly pay millions for them to get back together? That would be me, if I had millions. But there’s something about those opening cords of Waterloo that gets my heart all aflutter. And a rush of joy overcomes me and I sing along. Terribly out of tune of course, but like my life depends on it, while wishing that I had been born just a decade earlier and I sigh. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about, au contraire, it’s something I’ve learned to wear as a badge of honor, that I know all the words to SOS and will belt it out proudly. Not to mention that while Mama Mia has a catchy little tune, Fernando is so much better.

Anyway, I’m sure I’m not the only person in the world who feels that it may have been her true calling to sport gold lycra spandex and an afro, though I'll admit that if I could pull off the feathered look, I would totally go for it. Ok, maybe the only person to want the latter, but not the only person in the world who has an affinity for a group and/or singer that many would be embarrassed by. Right?

*maybe later, we'll discuss my propensity to listen to country and bluegrass daily.

When I'm in the right mood, I can have a lot of fun belting out Abba songs.

Don't tell anyone, though ;-)

Happy Halloween Heather!

What's wrong with liking Johnny Cash? I like Johnny Cash. And Willie Nelson. And Patsy Cline.

(And also Kelly Clarkson- please don't tell anyone!)

How can anyone NOT love Abba??? I really love how much better I am at singing to Abba songs when I can't hear myself. How 'bout "When I Kissed the Teacher"? And "Honey Honey"! LOVE that one! Hee!

I don't really have much to say, except . . .

If you need me let me know, gonna be around; If you got no place to go, when you're feeling down . . .

lisab: I promise not to tell! ;-) Have a Happy Halloween as well

megan: There is NOTHING wrong with Johnny Cash. I make a friend of mine play Folsom Prison Blues daily. And there's also nothing wrong with country, or so I'm learning.

guinness girl: exactly! Who doesn't love ABBA?!

kris: We can go dancing, we can go walking, as long as we're together...

Ha! I am a closet ABBA nut, I blame my momma, who is STILL an ABBA fan. We also have a mini shrine downstairs, hee.

You're not alone. Sometimes the classics are the best!

I do love me some ABBA but I'm pretty sure my heart belongs to Sexy/Back. He does, afterall, have an album called, "FutureSex/LoveSounds." Whatever that means.

Love Johnny Cash. ABBA, not so much, but it's because I don't dance for shit. However, nothing irks me more than people who mock others' musical tastes, and if anyone rips on you, I shall harm them.

In fact, this is the topic of tonight's post. I was all fired up about this earlier, from separate circumstances.

ABBA. Yeah, it's like a punchline. But they were original, they left their mark.

I confess to having their Greatest Hits (and to having purchased several of their albums when they were released...). But, praise be, I don't sing along.

Speaking of great music, VH-1 premiered it's Top 100 Songs of the 80's last night!

Tone Loc, Berlin, Bow Wow Wow, Prince, Men At Work, Robert Palmer... Needless to say, I was glued.

Rock me, Amadeus!

alyndabear: awesome! too bad my mother hates them, therefore I'm jealous.

angela: I must admit that I've never used ABBA in karaoke. Which has less to do with their music and more to do with the fact that I don't sing during karaoke.

abigail: My heart belongs to JT as well. I want someone to write me a symphony to show me how much I mean to them.

mkd: I'm one of those crazy black people from upstate NY who can't sing for shit. Odd I know.

jonniker: I LOOOOOVE Johnny Cash a hell of a lot more than ABBA.

wunelle: When they were released?? Wha? Huh?

sir bone: I love me some Tone Loc. It's actually a little scary given that I was like 5 when he was popular. But you're old enough to remember all of the 80's now aren't you..? ;-)

All I do is sing and sleep and sing, wishing every show was my last show.

Abba = instant cheer.

Wait. There is someone who cannot appreciate both Johnny Cash and ABBA? That just seems unnatural.

Oh, and I go through days of wondering if I want to be Foxy Brown or one of Charlie's Angels (the originals). The 70s certainly had some interesting fashion choices.

ABBA, Heather B? ABBA?

I really hope this is just a phase that you're going to grow out of.

Of course, I still love New Kids on the Block songs so...

There's no shame in liking music other people deem cheesy. Except, of course, there is. Lots and lots of shame.

ABBA rocks, in that not-actually-rocking-way, and Johhny Cash is a fucking god among men, and the shame on that front lies squarely on those too square to listen to him.

Of course, I'm all sugared up on Halloween candy, so I'll end with this: I used to have a coworker named Fernando, and it took every ounce of self-control I had not to sing him that song every time I used his name. I confessed this once, and he smiled sort of sheepishly and thanked me, in an almost embarrassed way, probably while thinking of a way to never, ever speak to me again. "There was something in the air that night, the stars were bright..."

But Take a Chance on Me is the eternal optimist's anthem, right?! Love me some ABBA, but when I really want to party, there's only Neil Diamond.

"My name is Sue, how do you do? Now you gonna DIE!!"

I admit, at the moment we gave our oldest son his name, the thought crossed my mind.... "Should I?"

Still think I have the vinyl ABBA greatest hits from Columbia House. One of 13 albums I got for a penny, along with ELO!!

Timeless stuff, that!

I'm slightly amused right now, about my eclectic music taste. I mean, I LOVE ABBA. LOVE. But my ipod is busted so I've been listening to NPR in the car but then also such gems as 'Shake your money maker' (Ludacris), 'Come to Me' (Diddy), 'My Love' (JT), 'Stuntin' Like My Daddy' (Lil Wayne and Birdman).

So, umm...yeah.

Have I mentioned that I dance in the car as well?
